In this course we have considered the “Conquest of the Continent” in the years between 1864 and 1890. During this time the middle of the American continent was changed from a lightly populated region of grasslands, mountain ranges and semi-desert areas having a mostly migratory Native American population to a politically and economically integrated region of the United States with cities, farms, industry (including but not exclusively mining), railways and tourism.

Your assignment is to write an analytical research paper on the topic of the “Conquest of the Continent.” Your paper should look at the reasons why this region changed, what brought American settlers, institutions, and cultural beliefs into the region and how those events impacted the region, its environment, and its indigenous peoples.
