Poetry Emulation Exercise

Creative Writing – Emulation Exercise

Write a poem emulating one of the authors from the assigned readings. Select one of the three options below:

1) Write ten long-lines similar to Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl.” Use a stream-of-consciousness approach, or a continuous flow of internal thoughts.

2) Write three stanzas of five lines each, similar to Sylvia Plath’s “Daddy.” This poem can be confessional in nature, or about something entirely different. Use any rhyme scheme you would like.

3) Write an open-form poem similar to Paul Blackburn’s “Brooklyn Narcissus.” Use the entire space of the page, moving text around in surprising and unusual ways to support the content. Write around a half page of poetry.
