The topic I have chosen is police shootings and social justice.
1. Write a two-page paper on a Social Justice/Ecological Issue or Phenomenon and explain why it interests you.
2. Include two other disciplines that work in conjunction with your interests.
3. Some examples are: interracial marriages, religious intolerance, gender inequality, racism, colorism, classism, poverty, environmental pollution, sustainable living, eat local movement, homelessness, joblessness, illegal/legal immigrant challenges, or food desserts.
Examples:
I plan to research Colorism. The other disciplines associated with Colorism are: Psychology (Society makes dark-skinned people think that they are not attractive which causes some darker-skinned people to devalue themselves. In some families the lighter skinned brother, sister, cousin, niece is treated better.), Economics (Lighter skinned people are more desired in the workplace and earn more money. Lighter skin women most often play the leading role in film and television. Bleaching (lightening skin creams are on the rise. In India, Bollywood, in particular, both women and men are bleaching their skin due to a cast system.) OR
Social Justice Issue: The shooting of Trevon Martin. The phenomena that came out of this was the “hoodie” and “black lives matter.” The other disciplines associated with it are: Criminal Justice (Trevon was murdered.) Economics (Sales increased for the hoodie globally), Psychology (Mental and emotional stress on Black men. Research performed in 2017 by the Mayo Clinic shows that black men are suffering with schizophrenia at a disproportionate rate. This is traditionally a white person’s mental illness.) OR
Ecological Issue: Poor Drinking Water in Flint, MI: Biology (The ill affects the water is having on the human body: miscarriages, birth defects, body soars, cancer rates have risen) Chemistry (What’s causing the toxicity of the water?) Economics (Bottle water companies are making a profit because these residents must purchase water to drink, to bathe, and to wash their clothing.)
