Description
Your company collects and analyzes financial information for the banking industry. The information your
company typically collects and analyzes consists of lending information that includes custom’s income,
household expenses, loan payment history and any loan defaults. The recent Pandemic (Covid-19) outbreak
has caused a number of employees at your company to miss work. So, your employer has asked you to work
on a special project. The project consists of asking employees to supply the following information:
1. If, and when, they have had a flu/Covid-19 vaccination;
2. Family history of illnesses, and the number of work days an employee missed for the past three
years due to health-related issues;
3. What, if any, medication the employee has taken or used for the past thirty days;
4. The employee’s blood type; and
5. If the employee has been diagnosed with, or has had symptoms of, the flu/Covid-19 within the past
fifteen days.
The employer wants you to analyze the information to determine if there is any common factor that may
identify employees whom are more likely to miss work for flu/Covid-19-related illness. Also, the employer
wants to supply this analysis and information to the health insurance company that provides health insurance
coverage to the employees so the insurance company may provide preventive health advice and information
to employees.
1. Will the collection and analysis of this information be regulated by HIPAA? If so, how, if at all, may
the company avoid/reduce HIPAA regulation of this project?
2. What, if any, restrictions might apply to the collection and/or use of this information?
3. What, if any, restrictions might apply to the employer sharing this information/analysis with its
health insurance provider?
