It is an essay for my seminar in my MSc in European Studies. It has to include an argument and a proper structure (Introduction Section, Conclusion). we must approach the the resources critically. In the introduction please make a brief discription about the sections in the essay. Please the writer must be a UK native speaker !!!

Here some of my thoughts about the essay:

Argument: This increase occured in order to adress the concerns about the EU’s democratic accountability and hence its percieved legitimacy.

1) We need to metion in one page the early ages of European Intergration (Monnet Method: sector by sector approach, elite-driven process highly technocratic, spillover effect, no concerns about democracy since based on output legitimacy which is linked to permissive consensus ( European issues not salient for citizens, the EU too complex for public). The EP (Parliamentary Asembly) a consultative body with no formal powers

2) Things changed when the Maastricht treaty empowered the EU with more competences 2a) critical shift from permissive consensus to constraining dissensus -> the public critical towards EU decision-making , felt disconnected from the decisions taken ”in Brussels” which affects heavily their lives 2b) increasingly politicization – EU contestation since 1990s- polarized opitions over European intergration 2c) So far, the electoral link between European citizens and European legislation via elections of the European Parliament (second order elections), 2d) no demos thesis theory
-> need to enhance representative democracy through EP which represents the citizens voice

3) Empowerment of the EP formal powers (talk a bit about the other treaties but the most important changes occured on Lisbon -> EP co-legislator with the Council on equal footing with Ordinary legislative procedure (i have the reading about the importance of the co-decision for democracy), budgetary powers: decides upon the EU’s budget along with the Council (checks and balances on executive), appointment powers ( the EP has the power to appoint the Commission President and dismish the whole Commission – in a way the citizens can influence the political direction of the EU since the commission creates the political guidelines) ( In the section about the EP powers, we want to justify how they enhance the democracy !!!)
