1. Compare and contrast the Spanish, French, and English conquests of the “New World.” How did each nation acquire a foothold within the Americas? How did each shape the history of the United States? What were the relationships with Native Americans? Was slavery a large aspect of
society, and if not did it become so? If so, why? What were the roles women played in the construction of the colonies? Are women more prominent in one society more than the other
societies?

2. When studying the American Revolution, scholars look beyond the war to understand how the event affected the people, society, culture, politics, economy, etc. of the colonies. Keeping all of these areas in mind, was the American Revolution a radical event or a conservative stance by the Americans? Was the Revolution a revolution or a Civil War? Explain why.
