Description
Study the word “Witness,” then write a 1–2 page, double spaced summary of what you learned about the word and its use in Revelation in the CEB Study Bible.
Word Study: Witness
Your task is to learn as much as you can about a particular word used in the passage and to prepare to share what you find with the class.
Questions to ask
1. What role does the word play in Revelation?
2. What different ways can the word be translated?
3. How is the word used in other verses in the Bible?
Tools:
1. Interlinear Bible: An interlinear Bible can be helpful for identifying which Hebrew or Greek
word the English is translating. It allows you to then use the tools below.
2. Greek-English Concordance: A concordance tells you where else a word is used in the
same text, in this case, the New Testament, which was originally written in Koine, or “common,” Greek. Studying the context of how it is used in multiple places helps you understand its full range of meaning. It may be helpful to look up some of the other verses. This concordance goes by the Greek word, though some concordances just tell you where the same English word is used, which is considerably less helpful since the same English word can translate multiple Greek words and the same Greek word can be translated different ways.
3. Lexicon: A lexicon is basically a dictionary, but for ancient languages. It is useful for understanding the different ways a word can be used.
