What is the practice issue/problem? What is the scope of the issue? What evidence is there for the need for change? (~100 words; this corresponds to your description of your proposed Capstone Project in the discussion thread)
The formation of nursing students’ professional identities espouses teaching and role modeling in clinical settings, as they learn to prioritize patients and develop altruism. However, taking into account the outburst of the COVID-19 pandemic, many students could not perform clinicals in the healthcare setting due to the heightened risk of unknowingly transmitting or contracting the highly contagious disease. With clinical practices being conducted in on-campus settings, as opposed to hospital settings, it is uncertain how well-prepared the students will be to solve healthcare problems in the future. Additionally, there is uncertainty on how long this situation will last. Even after re-engagement in a “new normal” environment, there may be periods in the future when social distancing and quarantine may again be required. The critical challenge is creating authentic patient experiences for nursing students in an on-campus setting that matches the healthcare setting. Therefore, there is a need to efficiently complement didactic teaching practices with other realistic methods (high fidelity simulation) to prepare students through on-campus clinicals efficiently.
