Developing Health and Wellbeing Case Study
Ayo Adebayo moved to the UK in 2019. He trained as a doctor in Lagos, Nigeria and completed his part 1 exam to practice in the UK, but he is still waiting to complete his part 2. Because of Covid the exams have not taken place and there is a waiting list.
His wife Ayotunde is a nurse, but her qualification is not recognised in the UK, and she will need to do more training to nurse here.
Her parents Oluwa and Fadekemi moved to the UK in January 2020. Sadly, Fadekemi contracted COVID and died. Oluwa is heart broken and shows little interest in anything. He is very withdrawn and does not comply with taking his medication for hypertension. Since his wife’s death, he has been drinking very heavily and can be very aggressive when he is drunk.
Ewatomi is 13 years old and is trying to settle into her new school, but home schooling was very difficult, and she is glad to be back in school again. She is very homesick and is miserable missing her friends. She has started self-harming.
Folu is 6 years old and has Williams Syndrome. He loves his music and attends the same school as Ewatomi. He also suffers from Sickle Cell disease although he is very stable and has had no admissions to hospital for some time.
Ayo is working two jobs to support his family. He works in a care home three days a week as a Health Care Assistant and is an Uber driver for the rest of the week. He is waiting to sit his exams. He has started smoking again as it helps him combat his tiredness as working and studying is making him feel that life is very difficult.
Ayotunde works in a care home 3 nights a week as a Heath Care Assistant (HCA) which she is finding very frustrating as she is a qualified nurse. She is clinically obese and is worried that her weight could lead to health problems.
They live in a rented house in Watford or Barnet that has three bedrooms. Oluwa sleeps in the room downstairs and finds it difficult to use the bathroom upstairs.
The Adebayo family are Christian and are trying to attend the local church to help meet people in the area. They have family who live in either Watford or Barnet(The opposite Borough to the one you have chosen for them to live in), and they are considering trying to move to be nearer to family.
With reference to the above scenario please choose for the Adebayo family to live in either Watford (with friends living in Barnet who came from Nigeria) or the London Borough of Barnet(with friends living in Watford who came from Nigeria)
Use the information provided in the scenario as well as your investigation of their local community and consider the following:
What is the demographic profile of the majority of residents in this borough (whichever Borough you want them to live in)?
What community services (e.g. education, medical, nursing or voluntary) might this family need and what is available in their area?
With regard to demographics of the borough where this family live, what poverty indicators should you consider in relation to your family.
What nursing interventions do you think this family may need to enhance/maintain their health and wellbeing? What nursing related services are available which may be of benefit to them?
Consider the learning outcomes when writing your essay and please use relevant literature to support your writing.
In terms of learning outcomes, the essay will need to assess:
The professional context of nursing practice.
Ideas of health and well being
Social, economic and political context of health and wellbeing including factors affecting health and wellbeing.
