The Love.

.Story discusses and breaks down the different reasons to “love” someone.
• The girl is sent to Saigon for boarding school and notices a wealthy Chinese man is attracted to her.
• She engages into a sexual relationship with the Chinese for the sake of supporting her family. It was in her best interests too.
• The dynamic between these two characters knowing the circumstances the girl is in is extremely important.
• The older man in the relationship initiated and engaged into a relationship with the girl for his own benefit as well
• How does the relationship get involved after being started on such superficial terms.
• The fact that their relationship had to be kept secret because the idea of these two people engaging in a relationship because of the way they look is “too outlandish”
• Everything in this relationship at the time “seemed wrong” yet at the end of the story, they end up developing real feelings.
Book of Salt
• To me this book discusses the same issues but from a different perspective
• The idea of people being ostracized because of who they are and who they choose to love.
• Bin had to move to France because of the nature of the relationship he held. It wasn’t that he had a gay relationship but because that relationship was an affair. Unfortunately this lead to the relationship being viewed as a dishonest one. Another issue society had with the relationship was the difference in class between the couple
• After moving to France, he then engages in a relationship of the same nature with Dr. Latimore.
• It makes me think that if people didn’t judge others by who they choose to love and why they choose to love, These people wouldn’t have had to go through so many lengths to hide it. And because they hide it, people see these relationships in a negative light.
• A constant theme of love and how it can be found in many different forms
