Synthesis papers should be 2-3 pages long (approximately 1000-1500 words), single-spaced and tightly written, with attention paid to structure and logical flow. It may be useful to include 2-4 subheadings to help structure the paper. Use 1” margins and a traditional font (e.g., Times New Roman, Arial, 11 or 12pt). Avoid direct quotes of more than ~ 2 lines of typescript.
Synthesis papers are graded based on the following criteria:
Reflection on the debates and major points across readings, rather than summarizing individual articles (40%)
Attention paid to structure, logical flow, and writing style (40%)
Correct format (20%)
See the syllabus for more pointers on synthesis papers.
