Energy and Forces
Forces near and Far
⦁ List four actions that are a pushing force and four that are a pulling force.
State whether they require contact or act from a distance.
Push Contact or non-contact force?
Pull Contact or non-contact force?

Project Brief
Alien Forces
The problem
Film special effects have come a long way since black and white films! UFOs no longer need

to be dangled from a wire and moved across a camera. How can you use what you have
_______________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
learnt about invisible forces and constant forces to make a short video of a UFO?
________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________
The task
⦁ You need to create a scene for a film that shows a UFO moving across a skyscape.
__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
You will need to make a UFO, and a hover base for the UFO to move across. You will

___________________________________________________________________
also design and create a skyscape background to add to the hover base. You will then

___________________________________________________________________
need to film the moving UFO and create a short film scene.
_______________________________________________
_______________________________________________
Things to consider
⦁ You must work in groups of 2-3 pupils.
⦁ You must make a simple UFO with a weight that can be supported by a non-contact
___________________________________________________________________
force.
____
⦁ The UFO must move left or right across a hover base contained within a cardboard
__________________________________________________________________
box.
___
⦁ The UFO must travel a distance of at least one metre so your hover base should be at
___________________________________________________________________
least that long.
___________
⦁ You need to create a skyscrape prop to add along one side of the hover base.
⦁ You will need to film a video of the UFO flying across the skyscrape and add some sound effects.
⦁ The video should be approximately one minute.
Project Steps
Investigate
⦁ Revise contact and non-contact forces. Which force can make an object appear to

hover? Which force can move a hovering object left or right?
________________________________________________
________________________________________________
⦁ Look at videos of how to make objects that appear to levitate, with the use of a force.
___________________________________________________________________
⦁ Research different skyscrapes and how to make them into a prop.
⦁ Research different UFO designs and which materials are best to make a UFO a

suitable weight.
____________
Design, plan and manage
⦁ Draw a diagram of your UFO design and label the materials, including those required
___________________________________________________________________
to make it hover.
_____________
⦁ Draw a diagram of the hover base design and label the materials and measurements.
⦁ Select a skyscrape and draw a sketch of how it will look.
⦁ Allocate roles to your team members and collect materials required.
Make
⦁ Create your UFO, hover base and skyscape prop.
Evaluate and refine
⦁ Test your UFO to see if it hovers and can be moved left or right across the hover base.
⦁ Check that your design meets all the criteria.
⦁ Change the UFO, hover base or skyscrape if needed.
Communicate
⦁ Film a video of the UFO in action and add sound effects using an application like imovie or Windows Movie Maker.
⦁ Share your video with your class or upload it to your school website.
