As we have noticed, Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye is a novel about childhood—this is
signaled to us by the Dick and Jane story on the first page.

Essay Prompt: If childhood is a topic of Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, what is the novel’s theme about the topic of childhood? Remember that a theme is the author’s message about a given
topic. Your analysis must be supported with quotes from the text. Show me that you’ve read.
Furthermore, how could you compare/contrast what the novel says about childhood to your
own experience of childhood during Covid-19?
Note that this is a two-pronged prompt—it requires both analytic and reflective writing.
About half of the essay should be about the novel and half of the essay should be about
yourself and your own experiences.
