ASSIGNMENT

This assignment provides you the opportunity to

1. have a deeper understanding of the development and history of Jazz from its origins until 1955.
2. learn about major figures from each style period.
3. identify the unique characteristics of each style of Jazz and be able to identify them by listening.

Directions

1. Use your textbook and other resources to create a Timeline of the History of Jazz from its origins to 1955.
2. Your timeline must include the following:
   • Roots of Jazz – Blues, Ragtime, and Brass Bands.
   • The first three major style periods of Jazz – Early Jazz (New Orleans/Chicago), Swing, and Bebop
   • Musical Characteristics of each time period.
   • Examples of performers and composers in each style (at least three for each).
   • Examples of recordings (at least one for each style). Include a video or audio file.
3. You could use any tools to create your timeline. Here are some suggestions:
   • Word Document
4. Submit your Jazz Timeline as a .doc or .docx file if you use Word to create your timeline. If you use an external site to create your timeline (Blogs, Google Site, or other concept map tools), you can submit the link to your timeline here.
