Chapter 11 What does this mean to me? Reflection Activity
A professor is conducting a study of victims of child abuse and school-based counselors who work with these victims. The professor asks you to decide on sampling methods for both the victims and the counselors. What sampling methods would you choose, and why? What kinds of research topics do you think would benefit from each of the additional qualitative sampling methods highlighted? Justify your answers.
In this chapter, sampling method errors in the 1936, 1948 and 2004 elections are chronicled. Suppose a political commentator asked you to compare these errors with the various predictions that Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 election, up through election day. What similarities and differences would you argue existed between the sampling designs and errors that occurred in 2016 with these previous examples? As a social work practitioner, how would you apply this knowledge about sampling errors to your future work role?
Identify a research situation related to counseling in which a snowball sampling method would be beneficial. Describe how you would design a study utilizing this sampling method. What would you hope to accomplish with this study?
