Gender Identity
As you have read, gender dysphoria is relatively common occurrence in our society. There has been much discussion about gender identity and whether this phenomenon is a mental disorder or a biological disorder. For your discussion this week, I would like you to consider the following video about an individual who has transitioned from a male to a female. Please respond to the questions following the video.
Reflect on your understanding of gender dysphoria and traditional gender roles in our society.
• What is your view on gender dysphoria as a medical condition? Please do not just give your opinion. Back up your viewpoint with scholarly sources suing a sociological perspective.
• Jazz began to identify as a girl at a very young age. What role do you think her family had in helping Jazz to identify as a girl? Consider socialization of children by the family. How did her family support the socialization of Jazz as a female?
• Consider the expectations of society in terms of gender. How does gender dysphoria conflict with the norms and expectations of society?
• How do you think that having a transgender member affects family relationships? In a family with supportive members such as Jazz’s family? In a family that does not recognize or support a transgender family member? In your opinion, what is the role of family in this situation?
