In the first part of the paper, students are expected to engage the ideas of the two “founding figures” of sociological theory. Specifically, students are to answer the following question: What are the central social relationships of society featured in our course material on Karl Marx and Max Weber? Another way of stating this question is: how do Marx and Weber conceive of “the social?” In the second part of the paper, students are expected to examine how one of the following branches of contemporary sociological theory compare and contrast with the theoretical perspectives of Marx and Weber: intersectionality theory. Specifically, students are to answer two questions: (1) How does intersectionality theory build on the ideas of Marx and Weber? (2) How does intersectionality theory differ from the ideas of Marx and Weber and make its novel contribution to sociological theory?
