the potential to be detrimental since patriarchal privilege is present in many Latinx
families. Familism reinforces hierarchical power relations that encourage women to act
“for the good of the family” and can also lead to rejection of and violence against sons
who do not conform to heterosexist ideals (Alcalde, p. 541).
