There are two parts to this reflection paper. First, historical background on our groups, and their SES today. This first part will be your thoughts about what you think would happened to a “new group” entering American society today? As a “minority” what can they expect? What would you tell this new group? The second part of this assignment is to review the course and give your thoughts on how to improve the course. Your report should be 2-3 pages in length, double spaced, and typed.
Imagine that a new minority group entered the United States today. They have no racial or ethnic ties to any of the minority groups we have studied. What experiences would you tell them to expect during the contact period? What advise would give this group on the pathways of being included into American society, pathways being strategies for integration and assimilation, or pluralism. Which group that we studied would you recommend this new group to follow and why? Keep in mind the concepts and terms we learned in class, for example, contact and conflict, assimilation, integration, the Noel hypothesis, identity, prejudice and discrimination, being a subordinate group, and the role of the dominate group. Finally, comment on what you think the future of race relation will be like in the U.S. in coming years, your life time? This report is based on your observations on all the information you picked up in this course. You can use some information from the textbook, but mostly your thoughts. What were your overall thoughts about what we covered in class about race relations?
Having completed the course, discuss your thoughts about the course materials, course assignments, films, etc. What changes would you recommend that could be incorporated into the course?
