Description
Read CHAPTER 6 of the textbook: For the purposes of this class, do not read Multiple Rule Patterns. It is great information but highly linguistic in nature and I don’t teach this course from that perspective. It gets into a lot of important language rules but I feel it can be overwhelming when paired with everything else I will cover, so please skip pages 115-118 (middle of the page). Please focus on reading pages 123-128. Read this lecture – I know there are a lot of videos. I purposefully try to choose videos under 5 minutes (other than the TED talk) so please make sure to watch them all. Please note that by me giving you only a few pages that you need to truly and deeply know and understand, I will not be re-covering them in this lecture, I expect you to ask any questions you have about the material, and I will expect you to be able to identify, apply and give examples for this material I assign.
discussion guideline – format: Think of this more as an essay or blog as opposed to a typical discussion post. I usually include a suggested length in the discussion guidelines but in general, no less than 3 paragraphs should be written for each initial post. Make sure to address all sections and all prompts in your discussion post. And again remember, this is how I am grading your learning and engagement with course material. Using short direct quotes from readings and/or videos, using class vocabulary and referencing class concepts will strengthen your post and your grade.

Week 6 discussion question file
read the three-page article titled The Body Rituals of the Nacirema. As you read it imagine that you are about to enter this culture (that does actually exist) and answer the following 2 questions:
1. What is the most “shocking” part about this culture to you?
2. Given the words used to describe this culture, what assumptions might you make about this culture? What do you think the people who identify with this culture are like? And what specific words or phrases lead you to make these assumptions?
Optional: Any guesses as to which culture is being described in this article?
Part 2
1. Pick one concept from this week’s lecture notes that stood out to you and explain why.
2. Pick one concept from this week’s assigned textbook reading that stood out to you and explain why. Be specific and feel free to include quotes.
Part 2 should be at least a solid paragraph. Also feel free to pose questions to the class that relate to the concepts you chose.
