In developing the research idea it is important establish a coherent conceptualization and problematization of the
topic and its underlying concepts and theories. This includes developing the background to the topic and the issues
discussed, developing relevant questions, the premise and objectives, and the approach to investigation.
DOs — Background/Research Problem
• Engage the reader through building a clear narrative related to the central theme of your study.
• Discuss the main developments and briefly current (knowledge) trends related to the topic.
• Explain the significance/importance of the research topic and validate this by using examples, referring to the
relevant key and seminal literature/writings or statistics and figures.
• Demonstrate and evidence the gaps in the research area/topic.
• Ensure to show that the significance/importance of your research together with the knowledge gap represent
the research problem.
• Explain how your study will contribute to addressing these gaps or to the development of new ideas or
knowledge.
• Articulate your ideas in a clear, succinct, and pithy manner.
