Description

This is for a research paper on waveguide modes. (IEEE format). In particular, for “single mode” fiber. Basically need to describe the phase matching condition (peak wavelength = 2 * Effective index * Grating period). This equation needs to be explained/derived/described.

explain how light propagates at a given wavelength with a certain phase velocity that depends on the refractive indices of the core and the cladding, as well as on the diameter of the core. Based on this phase velocity, an “effective index” for the lightwave can be defined. This effective index is the parameter that relates the peak wavelength of the reflection spectrum and the period of the grating.

It would be optimal if there was a description of the grating with a diagram showing the grating planes and their periodicity. This will allow you to explain more easily the concept of the addition of individual small reflections from the grating planes adding up in phase at certain wavelengths, which in turn leads to the phase matching condition (peak wavelength = 2 * Effective index * Grating period.

All of the above can be found in the attached ‘Kersey’s paper (Fiber grating sensors)’

Any textbook or online sources can be referenced. (theres no max or min number of sources)

Sources need to be IEEE referenced
