Continuing Competency Assignment (25%)

NURS2303 Nursing Trends and Issues brings many of the concepts and issues learned in detail throughout your practical nursing program together to prepare and support you for your preceptor experience and for life after graduation.

By now, you should be familiar with the competencies that are outlined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and have an understanding of the requirements of the Health Professions Act and how these relate to your practice. This assignment is designed to assist you in reflecting on your nursing practice and summarizing some of the experiences and learning that you have encountered throughout your program. This assignment is modeled after the actual CLPNA Continuing Competency process that you will engage in yearly to maintain your license.

Learning Outcomes

This assignment relates to the following course Learning Outcomes:

  • Evaluate the challenges facing Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) as part of an inter-professional, interdisciplinary health care.
  • Analyze situations where the LPN must address issues of ethics and jurisprudence.
  • Analyze the inter-relationship of the LPN roles as advocate, leader, and
  • Plan lifelong learning strategies to incorporate the CLPNA Continuing Competency Program into professional.

This assignment has 2 parts: Part A and Part B. please read the instructions thoroughly and use the provided form to complete this assignment.

Pre-Assessment

This portion of the assignment does not need to be submitted. Reflect on your own practice prior to your preceptor experience. The competencies listed below have been chosen from the Competency Profile for Licensed Practical Nurses, 4th Edition (2019) and are important to have a solid understanding of as a graduate nurse.

The attached tables contain excerpts from the Competency Profile that relate to these chosen competencies. In Part A, you will provide a description of how you have demonstrated these competencies during your schooling.

Part A

For this portion of the assignment, you will conduct a self-assessment of specific competencies chosen from the Competency Profile for Licensed Practical Nurses, 4th Edition (2019) and provide examples of how you have demonstrated these competencies during your schooling in the (PN) Program.

Complete the following table. Choose 3 specific competencies from W: Professionalism, B: Nursing Process, and D: Communication and Interpersonal Skills. For each of these competencies, provide 3 examples of how you demonstrated this competency during your Practical nurse (PN) program before your Preceptorship Experience. Type your answers. Answers should be no more than 3 sentences in length. A copy of the form in Word format will be available in D2L to complete and submit via D2L Drop box. 

Part B: Learners Participating in the Preceptorship Experience this Term

If you are not participating in the Preceptorship Experience this term, please see “Alternative Part B: Learners NOT Participating in the Preceptorship Experience this Term”.

If you are participating in the Preceptorship Experience this term, the following instructions are for you. Complete the following table relating to your first preceptor experience. This document has been modified from its original version found on the CLPNA website to make it applicable to your experiences as a learner. To maintain your license after graduation, you will need to complete this form yearly as part of a demonstration of your learning throughout the year and be prepared to submit it to the CLPNA as part of the validation process if you are selected.

An example of a completed Record of Professional Activities can be found at Completed Record of Professional Activities on the CLPNA website. Though the version below is modified from its original state, it has been designed to prepare you for practice after graduation.

If you are NOT participating in the Preceptorship Experience this term, the following instructions are for you:

  1. Complete the following table below.
  2. On 3 separate dates, choose one of the competency codes from the CLPNA.
  3. Access the library database and select a peer-reviewed article, which discusses this competency.
  4. For each competency answer the questions. Provide detailed summary of your learning. Explain and give example(s). Answers should be no more than 3 sentences in length.
  5. You should have 3 competencies in all, which are supported by 3 different peer-reviewed articles.
  6. Create a reference list for your articles which are itemized and labeled 1 to 3 and which correspond to the numbered competencies. For example, if your first selected competency is C-2 (Safety, Protective Equipment), then the first article in your reference list will be labeled “1” and relate to using protective equipment to promote competency in regards to safety in practice.
  7. Type your answers.
  8. Answers should be no more than 3 sentences in length.
