Dental Specialties Assignment

Purpose:

One of the great things about dental assisting as a profession, is the ability to work in different environments. Dental Assistants work in many different areas of dentistry and the roles and procedures provided often vary within each environment. All the specialties can basically be differentiated by procedures provided to the patients.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to become more familiar with one of the dental specialties that is outlined in DENT 227. To do this, you will be asked to determine the specialty that is in the case study provided, to research the dental specialty in the case study, and to compare treatment and procedures that take place in a general dentistry practice to those in the specialty. In addition, discuss which activities are within the scope of practice of a Registered Dental Assistant within the specialty you have chosen.
Instructions:
Determine the dental specialty in the case study you have chosen. (Case Study 3)
Introduce the specialty.
Compare the difference between the procedures that would be seen in a general dentistry office with those in the specialty office depicted in your case study (For example, why would a patient be referred to a specialty office and not seen in the general dental office?)
Discuss the role of a dental assistant in this specialty and any skills that may be performed within the scope of practice for a Registered Dental Assistant in Alberta.
Research specialty by referring to three (3) credible resources.
