For this assignment, you will select and analyze a Supreme Court case which deals with civil liberties. Research the case and in APA style format writing, report on the following:
1. Introduction:
a. Select a famous Supreme Court case. When did the Court hear the case and when did the Justices rule on the case?
b. Why did you select this case? Give examples to support your answer.
c. Describe in detail the background, factors, and steps which led up to the case going to a lower court and then Supreme Court?
d. Who were the stakeholders involved in the conflict and what position did they take on the issue?
2. Body:
a. What was the ruling in the case you selected? Which Justice(s) were instrumental in the ruling and how?
a. Describe the amendment(s) from the Bill of Rights which your case relates to. Give background information about what lead to the amendment and how it was used to influence the Supreme Court ruling.
b. Do you agree with this ruling? Explain the reason you agree or disagree with the ruling? Provide examples to support you reasoning.
c. What impact does this case have on modern society? Give examples. Explain how the ruling affects your community, family, or peers?
d. Which specific group or race benefited more than others because of the ruling? Explain how and give examples of new rights or freedoms for one group and not another.
e. Think about and identify possible alternatives to the court’s ruling. Give examples of why the alternatives are possible and the impact the alternative ruling would have on modern society.
3. Conclusion.
a. Briefly review the Supreme Court case and discuss whether the ruling solved the original conflict? Or does modern society still face issues that the ruling should have solved. Give examples.
b. What would you recommend the leaders, politicians, or governments do to finally solve the conflict?
c. Discuss the political climate during the time the case was presented to the Supreme Court and whether any barriers existed? Explain and give examples.
d. Think about if the Supreme Court had rejected the case and describe the implications to modern society. Give examples of how life would be for those who the ruling helped.
e. Overall, what are your main thoughts about the case?
