Chapter 2: Synthesis of the Literature

The purpose of the Literature chapter is to present the research that has been done to date on the specific topic you are analysing. The chapter should begin with an Introduction, which clearly outlines the academic argument for pursuing this area of research. It is very important that your literature review has a clear logical progression in its arguments. Therefore, it is important that you include link sentences that illustrate and argue why you are presenting the sections in the order that you present them. The end of the chapter must have a conclusion, which summarises the main points that have been argued throughout the literature review chapter.

You might consider the following to help synthesise the relevant literature.

• Introduce the concept providing definitions, benefits, process and success factors

• Determine the research problems with the issue

• Identify thematic areas directly relevant to your study

• Clearly state what research studies have been conducted in this space
