Description
Audio and Interactivity
M3H623530 Coursework 1
This coursework contributes 50% of your final module mark.
To research an example of audio and interactivity.
Learning Outcomes
This coursework assesses the following learning outcomes of the module:
Demonstrate an understanding of and evaluate the theoretical concepts of interactive sonification including physical input and output channels
Critically analyse and discuss various interconnection and communication methods in both a local and wide context
Tasks
• Select an appropriate audio and interactivity example
• Describe its functionality including its use of inputs and outputs • Evaluate its effectiveness
• Write a 1500 word report detailing the above
• Note – report should be within +/-10% of the above figure otherwise a penalty will be applied. Word count does NOT include TOC and Reference listing.
Report Structure
This report covers the technical details of your chosen topic and as such should be written in the 3rd person. It should have a formal structure such as:
• TOC
• Introduction
• Description of functionality
• Explanation of technology used including I/O
• An evaluation of its effectiveness
• Conclusions
• References (which are not part of the word count)
And remember that images/diagrams are a very effective way to communicate concepts in this context.

The GCU website has lots of information on academic writing at
and in particular how to reference where you got your information – see
How To Do Well in This Coursework
Select an example of audio and interactivity where you can source relevant background. There are lots of examples of alternative instruments and interesting ways to interact with audio on the web.
In terms of researching for this your best sources are as follows: • Academic Conferences
• Manufacturers
Note you can use examples that have been covered in teaching sessions, however you will need to go into a lot more depth for this report.
Marking Schedule
The following marking schedule will be used :
Description of functionality
A description of what it does, its aims, etc.
20
Explanation of technology used including inputs and outputs
A detailed review of the technology uses including sensors/inputs and actuators/outputs.
20
Evaluate its effectiveness
An evaluation of the effectiveness of the example considering how it fits into the theory of interactive systems as covered in the lectures and in your additional reading.
Your evaluation should also fully evaluate how successfully the needs of the intended user group are met.
40
Presentation
Layout, structure, referencing, etc.

Each section will be marked as follows :
2
An excellent and detailed discussion which is highly successful in satisfying the brief.
A good discussion which satisfies the brief.
A poor discussion which demonstrates poor understanding of the brief.
Submission Date and Format
More than 70%
50 to 59%
less than 40%
