For this exercise, imagine that you’re the chief financial office for a company, Music Studio Emporium. Your company has twenty employees, and you’ve been charged with the task of notifying ten of them that they’ll be receiving a 2 percent annual pay increase, effective immediately, based on their sales records. Unfortunately, you must also notify your other ten employees that they will not be receiving raises. Draft a brief memo (of at least 150 words each group) to each group of employees – one for those receiving raises and one for those who aren’t – in which you explain the company’s decisions regarding your employees’ compensation. Feel free to provide additional reasoning for these decisions as you see fit.

Consider how the nature of the news you had to convey to each audience influenced the way you delivered the news. What did you do the same for each of your audiences? What did you do differently?
