Your response should be not more than 3 pages, so careful editing and revision will be necessary.
Choose one of the questions below and answer compose a response in the form of an essay. You cannot cover all aspects of the question in only three pages, so you will have to be judicious in what you include: Be clear and specific. You may even want to narrow the question down further. References to the relevant, in the form of footnotes, please, will be necessary, as you will have to support your answer with examples from the text. You must also include a bibliography in Chicago Style, even though there will only be one item in it.

Consider Elizabeth’s relationship with Caroline Bingely and Ramatoulaye’s relationship with Binetou. How do they react to these ‘rivals’? Compare and contrast their responses. What do their responses suggest about their own conceptions societal expectations of women?

Both Elizabeth and Ramatoulaye reject suitors at at least one point in their stories. What do their rejections suggest about their own conceptions of marriage and their responses to  their society’s conceptions of marriage? What is the nature of marriage for these characters?
