Complete a
1500-word paper that focuses on the memory and/or memorializing of World War I using the book T.E Lawrence, Seven Pillars of Wisdom or Revolt in the Desert abridged version of Seven Pillars.
The paper should follow this basic outline:
I. Introduction: Provide the name of work/object/memoir and some background into the
author/artist who completed it. What is he/she’s connection to the war? What country are they
from?
Where did they serve?
How long did they serve?
II. Description of the object or summary of the work: This is fairly self-explanatory. Historical
references can also be used in this section. Descriptions of individuals, events, etc. If it is a
memorial or piece of art, give a detailed description of the object.
III. Analysis: How is the author/poet/artist/sculptor attempting to memorialize the war? What
feelings are evoked and what might the work tell us about the author/artist/sculptor’s attitude to
the war. Is the work meant to evoke a particular feeling or sensation, for example, heroism, sorrow, longing, pain, pacifism, anger, friendship, alienation?
IV. Conclusion: Draw conclusions about the work that illuminates our understanding of memory and
trauma in World War I.
