A parallel can be drawn between Patrick’s outward performance and the life he leads: shallow, insubstantial, flashy, and mostly vacuous.
In essence, American Psycho is a film about a psychopath, as the title suggests. He unleashes his wrath without restraint as he embarks on a murderous rampage, fueled by his feelings of resentment, lust, and jealousy towards everyone around him. But because of how calm he is, everyone who knows him views him as a decent, steady person.
