“Nursing is an art and a science that is forever growing and advancing with the utilization of nursing research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement. Discovering new concepts and utilizing these methods allows nurses and healthcare leaders to improve patient safety and satisfaction not only within their units, but within the field of nursing.
Nursing research is the foundation for evidence-based practice and quality improvement. Nursing research is systematic, scientific and opens the doors for questioning and advancement within the health care field. This form of inquiry is responsible for new information and knowledge that is then used for broad application within the nursing profession. Without nursing search, evidence-based practice would not have a basis to grow upon. This concept is the strongest form of evidence as it based upon knowledge gained from testing, development and evaluation (Dang & Dearholt, 2018).
Although nursing research and evidence-based practice are similar with the use of critical thinking and a systematic approach, these concepts are separated by the use of non-research that is utilized in evidence-based practice. Non-research includes quality improvement projects, patient values and provider expertise that is crucial in the clinical decision making process. This blend of the best scientific evidence and the best experiential evidence is associated with improved patient satisfaction and outcomes (Dang & Dearholt, 2018). This form of inquiry also fosters the idea that research and clinical experience can evolve, which allows for providers to continue to extend their education and potentially conduct further nursing research to obtain the most up-to-date, scientific practice.
Quality improvement is a source of non-research evidence that is collected in local scales such as a hospital or individual unit. Once a concern has been identified in a local level, quality improvement measures such as projects, surveys and activities can be initiated to understand where improvement can occur (Tibeihaho, etal, 2021). Nursing research has been recognized as the strongest form of evidence; however, nursing research may be limited and require the use of quality improvement data to initiate the nursing research process. There are multiple opportunities and possibilities to initiate quality improvement motions within our professional field, and those opportunities could fuel potential nursing research.
A medical center in the Midwestern United Stated identified workplace incivility as a problem within their facility, and as a result conducted an educational quality improvement activity to teach participants how to effectively communicate while brining awareness to the prevalence of incivility. Although this study requires further nursing research, the participants of this quality improvement activity noted the successful use of a positive conflict management strategy after the educational intervention (Howard & Embree, 2020). Quality improvement activities such as the one conducted above validate the importance of doing local scale research and improvement activities to improve satisfaction of all individuals within the healthcare system”.
