For this assignment, you will write an op–ed short paper (500–750 words) on political or policy issue of your choice. The
goal of this essay is to write an informed and persuasive argument that targets a general (lay) audience. The op–ed
should explain why the issue is important and what people should/need to know. “The purpose of an op–ed is to offer
an opinion. It is not a news analysis or a weighing up of alternative views.
Topic and Theme:
Every op–ed piece must have a clearly defined topic and theme. These should outline the single main point that your op–
ed aims to make.
• Topic: Clearly identify the person, place, issue, incident, or thing that is the primary focus of the column. The
topic should be stated in the first paragraph.
• Theme/: What is the overarching premise or argument of your op–ed? What is your point? Why is your
point important? The theme usually appears early in the piece, but it may appear later, once the supporting
information or premises have been laid out. It is important to state your theme clearly to communicate the
objective of the op–ed.
