ASSIGNMENT

Think about the backdrop of the changing world during this time: womens’ lives, industrialization, slavery, imperialism, science, religion, class struggles, feminism, etc.

Choose any issue that speaks to you. You can get as specific and nuanced as you would like to (often the more specific the better for shorter papers).

Investigate the ways in which these novels do and/or do not grapple with the issue you have chosen. Compare the way the issue is dealt with in each of the two novels. Explain the larger importance, question, or purpose for exploring this in the two novels (i.e., have a clear thesis/main point).

You should be researching your idea to see what some of the discourse is around your topic to make sure you are adding something valuable to the conversation that has been happening.
