1. One argument for discrimination based on language is the need for people to understand. For example, air traffic controllers around the world speak English; however, they speak with different accents and dialects. Can we solve the need for complete intelligibility in such ‘life or death’ situations while respecting linguistic diversity? If so, how? If not, how can we call such discrimination socially just, or do we just have to accept such discrimination?
2. Understanding a different variety of language (such as an ‘unusual’ accent) requires effort. Can for profit businesses ask their customers to make this effort (Note that in the US the EEOC requires this to an extent)? If so, how can they stay competitive in market conditions? If not, does this mean that marginalized communities must stay marginalized in the economy?
