Egoism and Social Contract Assignment
Read attached files and write substantive responses to each of the following questions. Answers should be clear and detailed and fully answer all parts of the questions. Responses to each question will generally each be at least a paragraph or two (and longer responses are fine). Please reference any additional sources used for answers.
Explain Psychological Egoism and Ethical Egoism, and how they differ, and critically evaluate both. If Psychological Egoism is true, would that provide a good reason to believe that Ethical Egoism is true? Why or why not?
Explain and critically discuss social contract theory, and its connection with egoism. Do you think we are obligated to obey the rules of society that we participate in? Or are there ever occasions in which it is okay or right to “break” the social contract? Support your answer with reasons.
Explain and critically evaluate John Rawls’ version of social contract theory, including discussion of his “Veil of Ignorance” thought experiment. Can his idea of a hypothetical social contract provide us with fair/just rules for society? Why or why not?
What does Dr. King say we should do in response an unjust social contract (i.e., a system of unjust laws and institutions)? How does he respond to those who argue we should be patient and wait for the system to rectify unjust oppression? Do you agree or disagree with his arguments, and why?
