What properties allow for bacteria to survive inside of the stomach?
As we continue to discuss digestion and metabolism, I started to wonder how bacterium are able to survive inside the harsh environment of the stomach.
Bacteria can be found throughout the body, and the stomach is no different. However, instead of being digested or dissolved some species are are able to thrive within the stomachs acidic conditions.
Are gastrointestinal bacteria tolerant to low PH or do they posses other qualities that allow for them to tolerate stomach acids?
Question 2:
Are there any coupled reactions that are useful to make products that we use for technology?
We learned about coupled reactions in class as a way for cells to carry out reactions that “a thermodynamic-ally unfavorable reaction sequence can be converted into a favorable one by coupling it to the hydrolysis of ATP molecules in a new reaction.” This made me wonder if there are any commercial processes that use the same principal to make compounds that we use for other things.
