Purpose: Use effective communication skills to describe ways to demonstrate caring
behaviours, compare and contrast two caring theories and identify how nurses integrate caring
theories into nursing practice.

Your paper should address each of the questions listed below. Students must use one reliable
resource to support your perspective. The length of this paper should be maximum 2 pages,
excluding the title and reference page (use the length estimates below as a guideline). Refer to
the rubric for grading criteria.
1. Using your own words, define caring. (1 sentence)

2. Describe ways to express or demonstrate caring behaviours in nursing practice. (2 – 3
sentences)

3. Select two caring theories that resonate with you and briefly summarize the main
concepts of each theory (¼ – ½ page)

4. Briefly identify similarities and differences among your two chosen caring theories. 1 – 2
similarities/differences is sufficient (¼ page)

5. Select ONE of your chosen caring theories and describe how it is used in everyday
practice. (¼ page)

6. Describe ways that this theory contributes to patient experiences and overall health
outcomes. (¼ page)
