EDUC 106 History, Governance, and Finance Assessment
Directions:
This assignment is going to ask you to collect some artifacts, analyze some data, and participate in a class discussion. Use the web or other resources to answer the questions below. Be ready to answer any of the questions in class. Responses need to be written in standard format and uploaded to Blackboard. You also need to bring a hard copy to class on the due date.
The following website will be of assistance – as will other resources. https://data.nysed.gov
Choose a NYS School District and get approval from your instructor.
How many members are on the BOE, and how often do they meet?
What is the school district’s administrative structure? Is there a flow chart or publication that shows it? Create one if needed, and turn this in. See example.
How much is the superintendent paid? http://www.p12.nysed.gov/mgtserv/admincomp/
What is the district’s budget process? You can often find a calendar of dates where there will be public meetings and dates for certain deadlines. Districts will have a budget brochure that goes out to the public. Collect and upload this with assignment as a PDF.
Find a pie chart or graph that illustrates budget expenditures. It is probably in the public information. What is the largest expense? What is the least? How many pages is the actual budget?
Use the data website above to find your district. Make sure you use district data and not school data. Click on 2019-20 (If you can’t find some information, or if the link doesn’t show up for a topic, go to the previous year.) and find the following:
Fiscal Supplement – Go to the Archive Tab, scroll down to 2018-19 to access this report. COLLECT THIS PAGE as a PDF and upload with assignment.
