1. Should be research-based and no just one person’s bright idea
2. Should be developed with input and buy-in from all members of the school community.
3. A committee comprised of administration, guidance counselor(s), teachers, parents and a student or students should develop the expectations and present it to staff, and parents in separate meetings with opportunities for input and revision.Discuss
4. A pilot should be implemented with opportunities to collect data on how it is working. Special care should be paid to the possibility of unconscious bias towards underrepresented populations within the community.
5. The plan should be restorative and not punitive, helping students to reflect on their actions and get to the root of problematic behaviors.
