Additional Guidance:
(Essay A) A good answer will:
•Define each approach chosen and discuss their theoretical basis.
•Consider research/literature into their specific applications to Probation practice
•Critically compare the potential strengths/weaknesses of each model in terms of effective rehabilitation of offenders. N.B. depending on approaches chosen you may wish to consider similarities and how they may complement each other, as well as contrasts.
•Ensure that your discussion is able to lead to a clear conclusion about the overall effectiveness of each approach and their implications in practice.
There are no definite ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers, e.g. your conclusion may be that either approach is generally stronger or that they both have equal merit, however it is important that this is supported by evidence in the main body of your essay.
(Essay B) A good answer will:
•Show an understanding of the Equality Act and how it is reflected in relevant Probation policy.
•Consider sources of possible discrimination against the chosen characteristics within the CJS in general with some specific emphasis on how these may manifest in a Probation context.
•Critically discuss how Probation practitioners can seek to promote anti-discriminatory practice.
•make specific reference to theory and learning from this module- e.g. what barriers to rehabilitation may exist in relation to the characteristics chosen, what models/approaches may be effective in terms of limiting the potential impact etc.?
