Domestic Violence in Emerging Adulthood.
1. The first part of the presentation focused upon the incidence of domestic violence in emerging adulthood and what we know about the victims. Yasnil Fabian following question for the class to respond to:
(a)Women are usually the ones that are portrayed to be the victims of domestic violence why? (b)Why don’t we usually hear about men’s experiences if they experience domestic violence too? Explain.
2. The second part of the presentation focused upon the psychology/ forensic psychology of the perpetrators of domestic violence against young adults. Tiffany Hernandez following question for the class to respond to:
(a) Childhood victimization (physical harm, witnessing violence, exposure to community violence, peer/sibling victimization, sexual assault, and property offenses such as robbery) have been linked to young adult criminality. What do you think the reasoning behind this is? (b) Do you believe that victims of child abuse are more likely than non-victims to become one-time offenders/reoccurring perpetrators of domestic violence? Or not? Explain.
3. The third part of the presentation focused upon the legal/ criminal justice implications of domestic violence in emerging adulthood. Jazzia Findlay following question for the class to respond to:
(a) Are individuals at the age of 20 considered logical thinkers? Explain. (b) If a 20 year-old woman (X) and a 20 year-old man (Y) are in a domestic relationship and X violently abuses Y; then, what legal considerations would inform Y’s inclination(s) to report X to the police? Explain.
