The economic value of sport and sports markets, has seen significant growth over the years. With the application of general economic theories and concepts, critically review the economics and economic value/significance (you may consider a stakeholder perspective) of a sports league / team / club of your choice.

1.1.2  Assignment Instructions

Your report must be 3,000 words in length.

  • Introduction

You need to briefly introduce and contextualise the focus of your report, and identify the main points to be discussed. Remember to include the aim and objectives as well as explain the structure of your report so the reader knows what to expect.

(Indicative word count: 300 words)

  • Main Body/Findings

In this section you must demonstrate that you can critically discuss the economic value/significance of a sports league / team / club of your choice.  You must draw upon economic theories (e.g. supply and demand) and concepts (e.g. employment / labour), considering the various sports markets that this may relate to.

It is suggested you explain the past, present and future economic issues.  Provide illustrative examples, review relevant literature and ensure your arguments are supported with appropriate references throughout your report.  For instance, you should think about:

  • The general organisational model of the chosen sport league / team / club.
  • The internal, micro and macro environments your chosen sport league / team / club is operating within – using relevant data from reliable sources.
  • Specific cases showing awareness of the economic theories and concepts as applied to your chosen sports league / team / club (e.g. the economics of baseball).
  • Possible areas for discussion:
    • Industrial economics (e.g. league organisation and the relationship between teams; competitive balance).
    • Labour economics (e.g. labour markets in view of player mobility i.e. transfers, and salaries / wage rates or determination, players unions and collective bargaining, sports agents, player allocation).
    • Demand theory (e.g. impact of different variables on game attendances).
    • Economics of sport events and infrastructure (e.g. ticket pricing, broadcasting, economic impacts of events).
  • Put forward possible recommendations for the sport league / team / club / organisation to adopt in the long-term (next 8 to 10 years) to enhance economic performance. Your recommendations should be clearly linked to the preceding critical discussion of economic theories and concepts.

This list is not exhaustive. You should discuss other relevant areas identified by you, drawing on your lecture notes, reading and personal research. It is not expected that you cover all the areas but Remember to be critical.

(Indicative word count: 2, 400 words)

  • Conclusion

You should conclude by summarising the main points emerging from your discussion.

(Indicative word count: 300 words)

  • Reference List

In your reference list you should include all of the books, articles, websites and reports that you have referred to in your research. Reference all citations by using UEL’s standard Harvard referencing system from Cite Them Right.

  1. Reassessment Information:

In order to pass a module, you must both achieve an aggregate mark of 50% and also meet the component threshold marks

Where a student does not achieve an aggregate of 50%, or does not achieve component threshold marks, the student is reassessed in the module at the next reassessment point in all and only those components achieving a mark of less than 50%. Component marks of 50% or over are carried forward to reassessment.

In determining whether a student has passed a module on reassessment the calculation is based on the highest component marks achieved, whether in assessment or reassessment.

In order to pass a module on reassessment a student must both achieve an aggregate mark of 50% and achieve the component threshold marks. If the module is passed, the student will achieve the module mark but any reassessed components will be capped at 50% for the purposes of calculating the Masters award classification. Modules that do not include components will be capped at 50%.

You will be expected to complete a similar piece of work for your re-assessment.  Your assignment brief will be available on Moodle. The provisional resubmission dates are set 40 days from the feedback date.

  1. Word Count:

Your word count should not include the citations and reference lists. You should provide your word count on the front sheet. Exceeding the word count by more than 10% (below or above word count) will result in a penalty. If your work is significantly shorter, then you will probably have failed to provide the level of detail needed.
