Discussion 1

  1. Read “White Privilege? The Intersection of Hip-Hop and Whiteness as a Catalyst for Cross-Racial Interaction Among White Males.” Develop a thesis based on the writer Venice Thandi Sulé’s assertion that “despite (Hip Hop’s) appeal in a culture where whiteness is the norm from which all else is measured, hip-hop remains stigmatized because of its association with the black experience, which is often framed as dysfunctional and criminal in public discourse.” Specifically address the idea that white males who immerse themselves in hip-hop culture may represent the dawning of “new racial politics.Justify your thesis by comparing the films 8 Mile to Malibu’s Most Wanted. Take your own focus but you can consider the nonblack characters who have hip-hop culture in their lives. Do the movies offer the same understandings? Why or why not? You can consider what is different and what is the same in the films and why. Remember to give examples to justify whatever you say. Relevant mise en scene must figure into your examples. This post should pick one-two justifications for your thesis. Do not duplicate the justification/interpretations of a classmate. Find another interpretation, approach, or example.
  2. Make some reference to an idea in the course ebook Cinema, Hip Hop, and African American Perspectives in your writing. Take your own slant. Is there any “expanded perception of Black humanity and diversity?” Does white privilege operate and if so how? What happens when characters attempt to equalize or erase race as a central issue? Again, pick a focus. You are not trying to answer every question. If you use an outside source to help you understand the assignment, you must attribute your source using a citation style such as APA. All citations should include a link/web address if there is one. There is no length requirement for your questions or responses to other students.
