Three-dimensional Materials, Tools, and Process.

Writing Assignment Guidelines;
Select two works of art in the textbook from chapters 1-8 and/or 17-21 that exemplify three-dimensional materials, tools, and processes. Describe how each work was made, and explain how the medium is related to each works’ meaning. You may use the information from chapters 9-16 as your guide to the Materials, Tools and Processes used for the works you choose, however, it might mean that you will have to do some additional research beyond the minimum requirement to find the information you need. This will not be a comparative essay, so you may pick works that are not related in any way if you want to as long as they are both three-dimensional. Include the title of each work, the artist who created it, and the page number on which it appears in the textbook. Your essay should be at least 750 words.
Assessment criteria
In assessing your writing assignment, we will be looking for evidence that you understand the materials, tools, and processes that are used to create three- dimensional forms of art, and the way that various media affect the meanings of sculptures, ceramic objects, glass works, fiber arts, metal arts, objects crafted from wood, landscapes, and buildings (architecture). The criteria we will use to grade your assignment are:
v You thoroughly discuss two works of art. Select only two works of art. Two examples, thoroughly analyzed, will better demonstrate an understanding of the concepts covered in the assignment than a larger number of examples that are superficially discussed. v You discuss works of art from chapters 1-8 and/or 17-21. Do no choose works from other chapters in the book. We are looking for evidence that you understand the concepts in this lesson well enough to apply them to new examples. v Your essay focuses on the materials, tools, and processes that were used to create each work you select. Do more than simply name the medium that was used to create each work. Describe the materials, tools, and processes that are involved in creating the work. Also describe the visual qualities or other features that are characteristic of the medium. v You explain how the materials, tools, and processes used to create each work are related to its meaning. Do not omit this part of the assignment. In addition to describing the way each work of art was created and the characteristic qualities of the medium, be sure to analyze the way the medium is related to each works’ content or reinforces its meaning. v You use at least five of the vocabulary that was introduced in this lesson. This is the same idea as the previous writing assignments. You do not have to use every word that appears in bold type in the text/commentary,
but use a minimum of 5 of the words to demonstrate that you understand what they mean and make them bold within the text. If you do not bold the vocabulary you are targeting for your discussion you could lose points from your grade. v You include a citation for each work of art you select. Please use MLA style. Include citations within the text of the essay as well as in a works cited page. You should include at least one source outside of your textbook to show that you have done some research. Please see the Purdue OWL Handout found on Canvas under the Academic Integrity Folder for information on how to go about doing this properly. v Your essay is a minimum of 750 words and has been checked for spelling and grammar errors. An essay less than 750 words is unlikely to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts in this lesson. Submission of the assignment Submit your assignment in the drop box (for your grading team) for the ThreeDimensional Materials, Tools and Processes. If there are technical difficulties prior to submission you may email the document to your team leader, however only in this instance. Emailing your essay will only prove that you completed it on time, you will still be required to submit your work to the drop box in order for it to be graded unless you have been directed otherwise by your Team Leader.
